************************** Chemical Properties of metals and non-metals ************************** Chemical Properties of metals Reaction with Air All the metals react with oxygen and form oxides. Metal + oxide  Metal oxide For Eg: Magnesium (Mg) + Oxygen (O) Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Copper + Oxygen  Copper Oxide 2) Reaction with water Most of the metal react with water and form metallic hydroxide and release hydrogen gas. Sodium(Na) + water (H2O)  Sodium Hydroxide (NaoH) + hydrogen(H2) Note:- Sodium metal is highly reactive. It reacts vigorously with oxygen and water and produce sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas catches fire. To protect sodium from air, it is stored under kerosene. 3) Reaction with Acid Metals react with acid and release hydrogen gas. Chemical Properties of Non-metals Reaction with Air Non-metals react with air and form oxides. These oxides are of acidic in nature. Sulphur (S) + Oxygen(O)  Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) Sulphur reacts with air and produce sulphur dioxide gas, which is a nonmetallic acidic oxide. 2) Reaction with water Generally non-metals do not react with water or steam. Hence phosphorus is stored under water. 3) Reaction with Acid Generally non-metals do not react with dilute acids. But sulphur reacts with concentrated nitric acid and produce sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and water. Some uses of metals Metals are used in making utensils. Copper wires are used in electrical apparatus, radio, electrical wires, fridge etc. Aluminium and iron sheets are used to protect our home from sunlight and rain. Gold, silver and tin are used in making ornaments and coins. 5. Mercury is used in making thermometer. 6. Sodium chloride(common salt), sodium carbonate (washing soda), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) etc are used in our daily life. Some uses of non-metals:- Sulphur is used in making acids, medicines and gunpowder. Red phosphorus is used in making match sticks, crackers and fungicide to kill harmful fungi. Graphite is used in making electrodes. Graphite is also used in the manufacture of pencils as an alternative of lead. ************************** If you like the video, plz like and subscribe us, as it will inspire us to move forward and update u with our new videos
