This hymn by Saint Ephrem the Syrian is sung during Lent periods in the Syriac Orthodox Church among others. This beautiful version is recorded by the choir Syriac Music.
The Hymn in english:
I was hungry so many times
for my human nature desired to eat.
However, I stopped and did not eat,
that I may become worthy of the blessing
reserved for those who fast.
My muddy nature
demands a splash of water,
but I let it dry out,
so that it is washed
by the dew of Paradise.
My mind became an altar
and my will became a priest
and like a pure lamb
I slaughtered myself
and offered sacrifice.
Saint Ephrem the Syrian is revered as one of the most notable hymnographers, a great poet, theacher and defender of the faith. He was born in Nisibis AD 306, served as a deacon and entered eternal life AD 373 in Edessa.
