@DMAN9910 months ago I like to imagine that the Diablo 4 office is like, 23 people staring at whiteboard for most of the day. Each employee waiting for someone else to make the first move, then after several hours someone finally speaks out “I think I’ll have Chinese takeout for lunch” they all begin to clap, tears flowing as they all follow suit and order Chinese. They finish their food, close up shop and head on home. Then the chimpanzee, Mr. Dingles, climbs down from the vents. He looks across at the Overwatch teams office, their computers overturned, covered in feces as they sit in a large ceremonial circle, spinning a large golden wheel to decide which character they’re going to turn gay next. After the wheel decides it’s next victim, the team cheers loudly as they begin to pat each other on the back. Mr Dingles nods proudly before making his way over to the Diablo offices and settling in for a long night of bug fixing, rebalancing and all around fun. ... 2343

@daerlix316410 months ago I was pissed when the start of season in PoE was full of disconnects, but then we got to know that automation went down due someone forgetting to approve something. Considering only 8 people worked on it and season start I'm amazed it was even up and stable so well. That's how you respond to the fans, tell them the issues instead of "important weekly emergency meeting where nothing is told or solved"... ... 93

@darkevilazn10 months ago The blizzard we knew and loved died years ago after all the old blizzard team left. Its but a shell of its former self. @kosakukawajiri500710 months ago This reminds me of when Goodyear tires went into a tire war in Nascar, at that time Goodyear had 350k employees. Their opponent, Hoosier, had just 16. And they were nearly dethroned by those 16 guys. Hoosier ultimately fell out of contention due to safety issues and Nascar dealing with crashes, fatalities, and Goodyear getting contracts, but it shows how well if people put their heart into their work, you can fight fhe best. ... 8

@Xkorpitron10 months ago the more people you have working on a game, the more confusion is insued, the direction seems to go nowhere, and these 8 people knew exactly the direction they wanted and given, so it's been proven time and time again the less people you have the chances of being a good decent game coming or even staying relevant content is higher, props to GGG for keeping PoE content relevant, at least for their users. ... 97

@Limrasson10 months ago I can totally see this happening. Not just Blizzard vs GGG, but in general. 5 guys who know what they are doing and actually want to do it can and often accomplish more than quite a lot of "I'm somehow here and I hope I get my next paycheck" employees. And these earwax repositories then celebrate their made up achievements.
I know, because I work at an IT company and even when I watch anime all day I still get praised for by outstanding work.

@skylarlinden94510 months ago I feel like small teams typically progress quicker than bigger teams because the time from a question being asked, getting an answer and implementing an idea is drastically shorter than what people at blizzard most likely have to go through to get things done. But if you had a big team with great managers, of course they could power house the work as well. Big team + bad management = blizzard. ...

@XENON312010 months ago poe has a genius in the team, im sure, something blizzard didn't find in their 1000 member list. A single genius and 7 people that are hardworking and extremely well adjusted on time and passion to do what they do, you put them all in and you have yourself a winning team. This also shows chemistry, since they have a mutual direction and clear communication, something Blizzard doesn't seem to have while praying to Bill cosby of all people. ... 1

@MINIMAN1000010 months ago The more people you have the harder it is to have both a consistent creative direction and vision. It is harder to work out every detail and get everyone in agreement that yes, that is how man hours should be spent. Things end up generic because everyone can agree that the generic answer seems reasonable. But generic is the opposite of what you want when you are trying to create a compelling and interesting experience. When time is money the more people you have the harder it becomes to justify moving a bunch of money in any particular direction. You start having to account for how much decisions cost. You start worrying about if the costs of something is too great. When at the end of the day what you need to be focusing on is creating a good game. ...

@kingtrode225510 months ago Why is it surprising? Small teams can create a family like work place, everybody can pitch and ideas flow. When people are just one more number of 500, they just follow the leader to not get sacked.

@supern0is34910 months ago meanwhile at blizzard we have to wait until season 2 so we can get gem tabs
  • @
@yushkovyaroslav10 months ago The tools we have today actually prefer smaller teams. So much so that you can get more done with a smaller team especially in engines like Unreal Engine than you would be able to do with 100 people. Mostly because of communication and organization, the main problem being is that the new person does not know what the old person did so half of their working time is understanding each other code. So, its inefficient. Tools now allow one whole section of the code to be done by 1 person. So that other people can be working on completely unrelated aspects of the project which makes it very inefficient. However, designing assets and levels still is a tedious process that can't be done by few people very efficiently. It does not have the same issue of communication unless designers have very different tastes, but that can lead to an unsolvable problem.
It really comes down to organization and a clear communion not only between the team but the customer (the company) to make big teams work.
